Over the last few weeks, the Viking healer had been spending her mornings with the native healer, Ahnah and then her evenings with Alva and Tapeesa. She loved watching Alva play with the kids, but the most important part of her day was learning the native language. “This is peal?” the healer asked the mother.

Tapeesa chuckled, “Seal, not peal.”

Kaitlyn grimaced before nodding. She turned to Alva, “Come get your seal blubber. We’ve smoked it beautifully.”

“We’re coming!” Alva called before scooping up Alasie and Yuka. The little ones were still giggling at the ways Alva played the big, bad monster and allowed them to slay her repeatedly in their games. Alva and the young girls had grown very fond of one another. Sitting down around the fire, Yuka insisted on sitting in Alva’s lap for dinner while Alasia took a seat between her mother and Kaitlyn, helping them pass out the meal to everyone.

“We’ve been wondering,” Kaitlyn said in the native language. She spoke slowly to Tapeesa, making sure she had chosen the right words. “Do,” already she had forgotten the word. She pointed at Tapeesa who filled in the right word, “you know of any big giant boogers.”

“Don’t think booger is correct,” Tapeesa said, while the children giggled. Alva laughed with them, despite not knowing what they were laughing about.

“She said booger,” Yuka giggled.

“Men? Mon... monster?” Kaitlyn tried to find the right word.

Tapeesa nodded slowly, “Their father died to an ice man. One attacked the night we found you, Fire Demon.” The tribe’s native language couldn’t translate Alva and Kaitlyn’s names, so they were simply known as “Snow Goddess” and “Fire Demon”. Kaitlyn had grown to like their nicknames.

“Show us?”

The young mother swallowed before shaking her head, “Adlartok can, he’s my younger brother.”

The healer nodded before translating for Alva. She looked at Tapeesa sadly, finally understanding why the woman so easily sympathized when she realized the rings were from Alva’s mate. “Ask her how long they’ve been here and causing trouble.”

Tapeesa frowned for a moment as she recalled the date she lost her mate, “Before the Dance of Souls and the long dark.”

“The Dance of Souls?”

Tapeesa looked up into the sky, sweeping her arms around to paint the picture in her mind for Kaitlyn. “The night that the sky is lit up by the souls of the dead, dancing in the aurora.”

The Northern Lights. “So only a short time before we arrived.” Alva didn’t know what the timing meant, but they needed all the information they could get on the Jotunns, if they stood a chance.

Kaitlyn nodded to Alva before looking back to the young mother, “Can you take us there?”

“I can’t, but my brother might. He was the one who danced with you,” Tapeesa said, repeating several words to ensure that Kaitlyn understood her.

Alva went stiff, thinking about the man in question. She had only caught a few glimpses of him dancing with Kaitlyn that night, and there was too much on her mind to have any opinion about it.
